Q: What inspired you to enter into a career in education?
A: Growing up, I had excellent teachers who took the time to get to know me as an individual. This has had a profound impact on who I am today. I also come from a family of educators; both my mom and dad were teachers. The hard work and enthusiasm as educators made a great impression on me, and I could not imagine choosing another career.
Q: Where are you from, and how did you get to Chanute if you are not from here.
A: I grew up in Holton, Kansas. My husband and I met in college. He is from SEK. We lived in Iola for 10 years and then relocated to Topeka, Kansas, where we stayed for 17 years. We have recently relocated back to help take care of family.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?
A: First and foremost, it is the people, students, families, and staff. I absolutely love the collaboration that happens to ensure that all students find success. Additionally, I am a learner by nature. Every day presents a new learning opportunity, and this keeps me motivated and moving forward.
Q: Are there any challenges you have faced in your role?
A: As with any career choices, challenges happen. However, my goal is to always look at the learning opportunities that come out of the challenge.
Q: How has your career evolved over time?
A: My teaching career was spent teaching transitional first grade, 2nd grade, and third grade. I then transitioned into an instructional coach role. I then had an opportunity to move to the district office as the Director of Title Services. Next, I was fortunate to become the Assistant Principal at CES when relocating back to SEK three years ago. Next year, I will be moving into an Assistant Superintendent role. Although I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at CES, I am now looking forward to the next challenge.
Q: Why is education important?
A: Education opens doors to opportunities. It equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue their passions, achieve their goals, and secure meaningful careers. However, it is not just about academic learning; it is also about developing critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and resilience. These skills are essential for navigating an ever-changing world.
Q: What do you enjoy outside of work?
A: Mainly, spending time with family!
Q: Can you tell me about your homelife? Spouse? Kids? Pets?
A: My husband, Aaron, and I have been married almost 30 years. We have two daughters. Glenna and Emily, who both teach in elementary schools, have two sons-in-law, Orion and JC, and one grandson, Jac. My husband and I have two dogs, Lily and Piper.
