How do you worship? What is the most natural way for you to connect with God?
Often we think of worship as being music and or a sermon. But there are many ways to worship.
Gary Thomas, in his book Sacred Pathways, describes different devotional ways people worship God. The pathways describe how we are most comfortable in our walk with God.
Here are some ways that may be your worship language.
Learning style. People with this worship style connect with God in a special way through learning. They draw closer to God as they learn more about Biblical studies and theology. They enjoy “hiding God’s word in their heart” Relationships. Relational people thrive in small groups. They grow best in a small group of other Christians where they can dialogue and pray for one another. “Accept one another as Christ accepted you.”
The servant. Have you ever felt especially close to Jesus when you are serving others? Volunteering to feed the hungry, welcome strangers, work with the homeless. Being involved with helping people is the best way for you to see Jesus. “When I was hungry you fed me….when you have done unto the least of these you have done for me.”
Corporate worship. Singing with a large group of Christians in church service may help you feel close to God. You love hearing the Bible explained to a large group. The Sunday morning service sets the tone for your whole week. “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.”
The Activist. The activist worships best by leading with passion. They press people with encouragement to see the Kingdom of God grow. Bringing out the best in people is their special way of worshiping. “Is not this the fast I have chosen; to loose the chains of injustice”.
The Contemplative. The Contemplative person loves extended quiet times with God. Reflection is natural. You enjoy “being still and knowing God.”
Creation. Some people worship best when they are in Creation. Outdoor settings are where they feel closest to God. Being outdoors refreshes the spirit of those whose path way is creation. “You have set your glory in the heavens; when I consider your heavens the work of your fingers…” There are many other worship pathways. BUt understanding these will help you discover more about you and the way God created you. Make sure that you use all the styles of worship because they bring a balance to your spiritual life. Each style will help you discover other aspects of God.
Find out what your primary path of worship is. Use all the styles of worship, but make sure that you use your primary path frequently. This will be one of your unique ways of being with God.
Learning to use them is a precious way to give your whole heart to God.
