Neosho County Community College is pleased to announce that it has received an Ameri-Corps Seniors (RSVP) grant of $145,000 from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism.
The grant will support the presence of RSVP volunteers and events in Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Franklin, Neosho, and Woodson Counties, NCCC RSVP has been providing volunteer services in Allen, Bourbon, Neosho, and Woodson Counties since 2010.
“We are very pleased to be able to continue to support RSVP here in Southeast Kansas and expand into our Northern service area,” said Dr. Karah Kellogg, NCCC Director of Outreach Programs. “Our volunteers impact countless lives within our communities by assisting in blood drives, food pantry distributions, veteran support initiatives, greeting youth entering schools, reading to children at youth centers, and assisting with ongoing youth events such as the College’s Halloween Spooky Parade and Sho-Knows Summer CTE Camp. They do amazing things and this is great news.”
With this funding, NCCC RSVP will continue to leverage the skills and experience of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in Southeast Kansas and grow that impact across Eastern Kansas by expanding into the Northern Service Area of the college in Anderson and Franklin counties.
Volunteers with NCCC RSVP are called upon to assist food banks, provide information about opioid abuse prevention, volunteer for blood drives, provide referrals to veterans, greet students walking into area grade, middle, and high schools, read to children, and help support non-profit events in the community.
The program also enables adults over the age of 55 to gain valuable skills through service, helping them gainfully return to the workforce. AmeriCorps Seniors serve in all 50 states and the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ameri-Corps adapts to meet some of the most pressing needs of communities, advance civic engagement and empower individuals across the generations to improve lives and communities all over the country.
