High Prairie 4-H Club prepares for upcoming fair

ALTOONA – On Sunday, June 15, at the High Prairie Church, President Tatum Francis called to order the June meeting of the High Prairie Pioneers 4-H Club. Acting Flag Leader Gage Gloshen then led the club in the flag salute and the 4-H pledge. Acting Secretary Gabe Engelman read the minutes from the May meeting and then conducted the roll call, which was “What is your favorite holiday?” It was answered by 14 members and two leaders. Song leader Locklynn Vest led the club in singing “Happy Birthday” to Cheyanne Gloshen.

Treasurer Gabe Engelman gave the treasurer’s report. Reporter Hunter Reaves gave the reporter’s report.

Parliamentarian Oliver Bilby and Leader Andrew Engelman explained to the club what “Old Business” consists of and that the secretary is in charge of keeping track of it. Garrett Engelman, 4-H Council representative, gave a brief summary of the May 27 meeting.

Leader Andrew Engelman reminded the members that now is the time to start working on projects as the fair will soon be here and that they need to enter their projects using the Fair Entry System online. Leader Kimberly Francis informed the club that they can pick up their fair book at the extension office or they can look at a copy of it online and reminded everyone to read over the rules for their project areas, so they know the rules for both the county and state fairs.

The members were also reminded to take note of fair events that take place before the fair such as the style revue. For committee reports, parent Megan Gloshen gave the club an overview of the ideas that the fair booth committee had come up with.

There was no old business. In new business the members selected the club’s candidates for Fair Royalty. The candidates are: Prince, Gabe Engelman; Princess, Tinselle Francis; Queen, Naomi Black; and King, Garrett Engelman.

The club voted to have the next meeting on July 20 in Fredonia at 3 p.m. to be followed by fair clean-up and then conclude the day with a pool party sponsored by the fair association for all of the county clubs. The members voted to hold the club tour during the fair with the date to be worked out later. The members discussed and approved ideas from the fair booth committee.

Vice-President Garrett Engelman announced the program. Loren Vest gave a talk over his kitten “Thunder” that his family had found and how it likes to stand on his shoulders.

Locklynn Vest presented what she had learned from her grandpa about how to use broom corn to make brooms.

Tinselle Francis gave a talk about her performing arts project and how it involves singing, dance and theatre, as well as how she keeps scrapbooks of her performances.

The club moved to the church’s sanctuary where Garrett Engelman gave a talk over the concept of resonance and dissonance notes and chords and how music notes are numbered by giving examples using the piano. Recreation leader Tinselle Francis led the club in playing “Birdie on a Branch.”

Leader Andrew Engelman reminded the members who have livestock that there is only one livestock meeting left and they have to attend two meetings to sell at the fair livestock auction.

Leader Kimberly Francis reminded the members they needed to enroll their projects for the fair by June 30. The Spirit Stick was awarded to Gage Gloshen for filling in as flag leader and closing the doors to the sanctuary when the club returned to the meeting after a talk.

Leader Kimberly Francis had the members who had brought a pencil and paper to take notes to pick a number between 70-90 and Hunter Reaves won a prize.

The meeting was adjourned by the members jumping while saying the 4-H motto. After the meeting, the club had refreshments provided by the Reaves and Crawshaw families.
