Blue Comets sweep Pittsburg tourney

PITTSBURG — Chanute girls tennis won the Pittsburg Invitational on Tuesday, with Parsons taking runner-up and Labette County third.

“We had a great practice on Monday, and it was obvious the hard work carried over to today in our final regular season tournament of the year,” Chanute head coach Michael DeLaTorre said.

Chanute notched 12 wins while Parsons notched eight, Labette County seven, Pittsburg four, Iola three and Coffeyville two.

Ella Guernsey won the No. 1 singles division for Chanute. Guernsey defeated Bethany Miller of Iola and Lucy Pearson of Labette County before defeating Heidi Shultz of Parsons in the championship.

Shultz defeated Pittsburg’s Alexa Salas and Coffeyville’s Sarah Turner en route to the championship.

At No. 2 singles, Chanute’s Leah Burnett defeated Parsons’ Laila Haviland in the title match. Burnett took down Iola’s Melanie Palmer and Labette County’s Hannah Benson in pool play.

“Ella and Leah dominated their two pool play matches, playing with a lot of consistency and accuracy on their shots, and their good play continued on in their championship matches,” DeLaTorre said.

Haviland won over Pittsburg’s Josie Conrad and Coffeyville’s Julia Solorrano in pool play for Parsons.

Chanute’s Rylee Smith and Jacqueline Smoot won the No. 1 doubles bracket, beating Parsons’ Manaye Ryan and Kadence Ball in the title match. The Blue Comets’ pair bested Iola’s Kyndal Bycroft and Harper Desmarteau as well as Labette County’s Amelia Carnahan and Madison Bevans in pool play.

“Rylee and Jacqueline’s dominance in pool play led to a very exciting and close match against a good Parsons team,” DeLaTorre said. “They avenged an early loss to them.”

Ryan and Ball of Parsons beat Pittsburg’s Emily shriver and Addie Broxterman as well as Coffeyville’s Stephanie Huerta and Melissa Escodero in pool play.

As for the No. 2 doubles division, Chanute’s Ashtyn Cummings and Kanika Marcoux put the bow on the tourney sweep by beating Pittsburg’s Makayla De Luna and Skylar Correll in the title match.

“Ashtyn and Kanika played probably their best tennis of the season today, losing only three games throughout the tournament. It was obvious they have been working hard and improving their game. Overall, a great way to end the regular season,” DeLa-Torre said.

Parsons’ Bailey Siu and Lexi Jones went 1-1 in pool play, losing to Pittsburg but beating Coffeyville’s Chrli gath and Lizzie Cook.
