This grandparent thing is all right!
How can you tell if someone is a grandparent? You know someone is a grandparent if….they walk in the door and discipline goes out the window… they insist kids need sugary snacks before bedtime…they walk slowly past pretty leaves and caterpillars.
You know someone is a grandparent if…they like the crayon drawings on their wall…their refrigerator is covered with magnets holding stick figures, drawings, and stickers…they watch cartoons even if KU basketball is on another channel!
You might be a grandparent if…you are a “quick draw” at pulling baby pictures from your wallet…you describe a toddler as “beautiful, perfect, never cries, and is an angel all of the time”… you buy toys you always wanted to play with.
If your house smells like cookies and Ben-Gay…you might be a grandparent.
Lois is one of the famous grandparents in the Bible. She was the grandmother of Timothy and is mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:5. Lois and daughter Eunice gave Timothy his sincere faith.
Grandparents can be important in molding a strong faith in grandchildren.Grandparents have more time to listen and tell stories than parents. Talking about Bible stories and their meaning in age appropriate ways ground a child in faith. Children come to faith easily. Let them come to Jesus.
Listening to a child talk about her day gives opportunity for bits of advice. But do twice as much listening as talking. Adults give children lots of things, except the gift of listening.
Children love stories. Tell stories about their parents. Building up the parents and offering a bit of wisdom will be a hit with kids.
One of my friends tells about meeting with his grandfather for lunch every day. Together grandpa would teach his grandson the Bible. My good friend is an excellent Bible student.
Another friend learned to read from the Bible. From the age of six she read the Bible and kept up the practice of Bible reading daily. Over the years the wisdom of scripture has become hers.
One thing I want my grandchildren to learn is to listen to God. Recognizing God’s voice will give them wisdom for every experience of life. Blessed are they if they follow the One who knows the way to go in every circumstance of life.
