Renewed Work of Art: Restoration and Revamping

Renewed Work of Art: Restoration and Revamping

Progress toward reopening is being made at the Chanute Art Gallery. Some glass display cases have had all the glass replaced and others have some of the glass replaced. New lighting is being installed in the cases as well.

A dumpster is in place for the ruined carpet. Holes and dents in the walls have been repaired and the walls are ready for painting. New art has been installed on the patio and another piece is being prepared for installation. The weeds are being cleaned out and a general cleaning of the area is being done.

The support that the gallery has received has been overwhelmingly gracious.

The insurance company was very thorough in finding the damage and the coverage that would finance repair and replacement. To say “thank you” to our local agent and staff is not adequate to express the gratitude of the board and members of the gallery.

The generosity of the Chanute community and the artists who are very generous in their commitment to the gallery is beyond mind-boggling. These acts of kindness have inspired the leadership of the gallery to not just get back open, but to be an even better partner in Chanute and southeast Kansas. Once again, the community has shown itself better by the way it continues to support the Chanute Art Gallery.

The contributions of one of Chanute’s artists is beyond believable, Bob Cross has provided leadership in the development of public art in Chanute. This summer, Bob has focused on some new art in the Irene Hudson Neely Plaza, located south of the Depot and west of the Art Gallery. Some of the older pieces, for example, are from Bob Blunk and Jim Kensett, leaders in the art community from years past.

Two new pieces of welded art have recently been installed. These exciting creations were done by Preston Fisher; a prolific artist. This is, at least, the third work of his art adorning the outside of the gallery. Our hats are off to Mr. Fisher and the generous sharing of his talent with the community. Be sure to check out these intriguing creations and be on the lookout for what Bob has for us to enjoy in the future.

The list of projects needed to be completed is getting shorter. If you have a desire to help you can email thechanuteartgallery@gmail. com to volunteer. Now, we need to move the furniture to allow for the carpet to be installed, and then move the furniture back. Finally, we will be hanging the exhibits. Three artists have agreed to provide the opening exhibit. We are looking forward to releasing that announcement next week.
