The Chanute Art Gallery… continuing path to recovery

The Chanute Art Gallery… continuing path to recovery

The damage from the April vandalism is almost all repaired. Now the tasks to be completed include the hanging of the exhibits. For this Grand Reopening exhibit we will have three contributors, Jake Villapando, sharing his drone photos. Hilary Shephard presents macro photographs of insects. Then The Chanute Public Library will be sharing some examples of art produced as part of their summer reading program, “Color Our World”. While these artists have produced a wide variety of skills and interests it becomes an opportunity for the curators of this exhibition to make everything look just right.

Bob and Jean Cross are the curators of this exhibition and are assisted by a crew of workers. Tasks include simply hanging the pieces where Bob has determined enhances each picture and the group as a total. Jean Cross is the master of theme development. Jean and Treca Jackson work together to enhance the total effect. The basis elements of design, color, balance, weight, rhythm and texture are all taken into consideration in the selection of the objects or florals used. Treca is self-taught and has gained skill in styling exhibits influenced by her other interests in music and theatre. These contributions are a work of art in and of itself.

The ART of hanging an exhibit is significant and a delight for a novice on looker to watch. Bob has perfected this skill/talent through years of practice both in his career and at the Gallery. You are invited to come help when the next exhibit is hung. Tall people are particularly needed and even the ability to know when a piece is level is invaluable. So, volunteers are always appreciated.

The list of ‘To Do’ is shorter but don’t worry, new things are added daily. The date of the Artist reception will be announced soon. The Docents are scheduled; a date is set for hanging the exhibits and the plan is for a Grand Reopening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony lead by the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce and Office of Tourism is set for August 5 at noon. Help us celebrate the rebirth of the Gallery following the vandalism damage we received four months ago. So, come to 17 N. Lincoln in Chanute to be part of the fun. Normal hours for the Gallery are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4:00.
