Leamona FCA learns about hospice

The recent Leamona FCE meeting was called to order by President Janis Reinhardt and Jackie Ward gave the lesson “Understanding Hospice.” The lesson was provided by K-State Research and Extension.

Attendees learned that to find a hospice provider, one can call 1-800-633-4227 or speak with a doctor. Hospice is a group of people who can help patients and families at the end of one’s life. They help the patient to be as comfortable as possible and give relief to family members. Attendees learned that hospice helps with developing a care plan, supporting and providing instructions for caregivers, assisting with daily tasks and providing grief support to the family.

The hospice physician is responsible for easing the physical symptoms of terminal illness. A registered nurse provides nursing care, and a hospice aide provides hands on care. A hospice social worker helps identify resources within the community or through agencies. Community volunteers can provide relief for caregivers by offering a short break; this is called respite care.

In other business, a report was given from Neosho County Fair activities. It was reported that all went well with the club’s booth about flour and the samples that were given to attendees.

Discussion was held concerning the State Fair in Hutchinson, Sept. 5-14.

The FCE State meeting will be Oct. 9-11 in Dodge City. Several members are planning to attend. Rooms and transportation were planned.

The next meeting will be Sept. 4, with Janis Reinhardt giving a lesson, “Protect Your Skin from Sun.”
