Cherryvale takes down Humboldt in Week 2

CHERRYVALE — Grabbing their first win of the season, the Cherryvale Chargers took down the Humboldt Cubs, 35-16, on Friday night in Week 2 action.

“It was a great game by our kids,” Cherryvale head coach Harry Hester said. “Four solid quarters of football. We continued to improve daily and gained a better understanding of what is expected to compete at a high level. This is our first win over Humboldt since 2016. Our defense played better this week, and I’m excited about 11 hats getting to the ball. Offensively, we were able to use all of our players, which makes it hard to stop.”

Cherryvale rushed for 180 yards, including 77 from Zeke Thornton on nine carries.

Wyatt Duncan accounted for two total touchdowns on 3-of-4 passing and 32 yards rushing.

Mason Sterling rushed for 96 yards for the Cubs while Ty Shaughnessy added 68.

Sterling was also 8-of-18 passing for 81 yards and a score.

The win for Cherryvale improved its record to 1-1 overall while Humboldt dropped to 0-2.
