Last Saturday, the Chanute High School Chess Team traveled over two hours to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival to help the Kansas Chess Association with a pay-to-play chess booth designed to help raise money for the organization. Rotating in roughly one hour shifts, nine players from the team battled anyone willing to pay $1-$5 for a game and a good time. “The total raised reached $191,” said Coach Kyle Gregg in a Facebook post. “That money goes directly to the Kansas Chess Association, which uses it to support programs across the state. In turn, those resources flow into the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association, ensuring that local teams like ours will benefit in the future.” Left Photo: Senior Eric Erbe, left, and a freshman, Kai Steves, right.
