ERIE — Winning six games and staying undefeated, the Chanute Blue Comets won the Red Devil Classic volleyball tournament on Saturday.
The girls had a great day continuing to get out of their comfort zones a bit and working on new things,” Chanute head coach Jory Murry said. “I think it was good to drop a few sets at the end of the day to wake them back up a bit to lock back into doing things right and pushing through adversity. Really proud of how they handled losing first sets to both Parsons and Neodesha and coming back for the wins.”
In pool play, Chanute defeated Labette County, Erie, Fort Scott and Lebo.
In the semifinals, the Blue Comets defeated Neodesh before taking down Parsons in the championship match.
The six wins improved Chanute’s record to 17-0 on the year.
“We haven’t specifically talked about our record. If it were the other way around we certainly wouldn’t dwell on it, so just trying to stay in the moment and focusing on the importance of each individual ball, each individual set, each individual game,” Murry said. “I think the girls have had success by doing just that. Each new ball has a life of its own and we put the previous ball behind us good or bad and live in the moment.”
Over the six matches, Addy Hughes racked up 52 kills while Josey Henson added 42. Hughes also had eight blocks while Henson had six.
“Josey and Addy both had great days. Josey also killed it in serve receive when we kind of struggled as a team on the day,” Murry said. “She is just a calm presence on the court and never seems to let anything get her down. Both girls really stepped up big against Parsons with some big time blocks that allowed us to stop their very talented middles.”

Chanute heads to Parsons for an SEK League quad.
“After (Saturday), we know we’ve got to step up defensively and in serve receive and continue to improve some of our new tools in the toolbox. Tuesday should be some great games against some great teams,” Murry said.
