Kansas Forest Association to host annual field day in Cherryvale

CHERRYVALE — Local landowners, forestry enthusiasts, and community members are invited to step into the woods and learn more about Kansas forestry at the upcoming Kansas Forestry Association Field Day, hosted at Dr. Phil Eastep’s property in southeast Kansas this year.

Field Days are an opportunity for anyone with an interest in forestry to engage directly with forestry professionals, ask questions, learn hands-on skills, and connect with others who care about Kansas woodlands.

Explore the Cross Timbers Forest at Dr. Phil Eastep’s property from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 16.

“Expect good people, great information, and a relaxed setting,” said Carolyn Turney, a longtime KFA member. “You’ll walk away with ideas you hadn’t considered, whether it’s how to manage timber, plant trees, or just to appreciate what you already have.”

Workshops and demonstrations include topics like tree identification walks, log-splitting and sawing demonstrations, forest preservation, and details about programs like carbon capture and legacy planning for woodlands. There will be plenty of informal conversations during breaks and a locally catered lunch as well.

“It’s not just about the facts,” said Floyd Schmidt, President of KFA and Walnut Council interim. “It’s about the people, the passion, and the shared love for the land.”

Eastep, this year’s host, emphasizes that the event isn’t about business — it’s about promoting forestry. “It’s a hassle to prepare, sure,” he laughed, “but it’s worth it if it inspires people to care for their land.”

This event brings together a unique mix of foresters, landowners, and professionals from Kansas and neighboring states. “As landowners, we appreciate what other people have done. We learn a lot at field days, and it is a good way to get ideas from all types of people,” said Carolyn Turney.

Whether you’re looking to learn something new, reconnect with old friends, or simply enjoy a day in the woods, the KFA Field Day offers something for everyone.
