HUMBOLDT — Falling for the third time this season, the Humboldt Cubs lost to the Eureka Tornadoes, 34-6, on Friday night in Week 4.

“We knew going in that they were going to be as athletic as we’ll see all year,” Humboldt head coach Logan Wyrick said. “The speed they have at their skill positions is top-level. They’ve got speed all over the place and that’s not something we have a ton of. They got some big plays that were difference- makers.”

Humboldt’s run defense was stymied as the Tornadoes racked up 235 yards on 32 carries on the ground.

“There were some frustrations on some things that were and weren’t called, but that didn’t change the outcome of the game. We couldn’t get guys set on the edge or get off blocks,” Wyrick said. “We had a big play called back. My opinions are obviously for my team. If we could’ve kept things from getting to the edge, maybe it would’ve been different. We’re young and we’re trying to find some footing.”

Christian Andrews led Humboldt with 108 yards on nine carries. T.J. Mills added 85 yards on seven carries, with Mills and Andrews each having a score.

Peyton Hare added two touchdown passes.

Humboldt’s Mason Sterling led the Cubs with 91 yards rushing on 19 carries. Layne Wagner added 74 yards on 20 carries.

“That wasn’t necessarily the plan. We wanted to get some other guys the ball a little more,” Wyrick said. “But we went with a heavy set in the second half with six linemen. We drove right down and scored to start the second half. We had another drive that we should’ve scored on. We went to that to set a tone of who we are. We want to find ways to get other gives involved. But if you find success, it’s hard to go away from it.”

Sterling was also 7-of-15 passing for 64 yards with two interceptions.

Broc Ivy led the Cubs with 13 tackles, including two for a loss.

Mark McCullough had five tackles with three for a loss.

Up next Humboldt stays home in Week 5 as the Cubs, now 1-3 overall, host Prairie View.

“They’re a classification bigger than us and I would argue that it was one of the most exciting games across the state last year,” Wyrick said. “Both teams’ offenses went at it. This year, they have two backs that are special. We hope we can use some size to keep them bottled up. We’ll never write a game off. But we need to worry about us. It’s not a district game and we want to use this time to get better.”
