Winners of five of their last six matches, the Chanute Blue Comets bested the Fort Scott Tigers, 8-nil, at home on Thursday in SEK League boys soccer action.

“It was important for us today to play well,” Chanute head coach Adam Wilcox said. “Fort Scott has gotten so much better. We didn’t look great at times and that was because Fort Scott has improved. So we had to change our mindset and play as a team. But we were able to get some of our reserves on and that was great.”

Chanute got goals from Eli Atherton, Edgar Delgado, Lawrence Chaney, Tate Matlock and Jhuf Yonson in the win.

The Blue Comets emptied the bench in the blowout win.

“It was great. Some of it was rewarding guys that have put in great effort,” Wilcox said. “They deserved some time under the lights. Those are the guys that got celebrated the most. They’re great program moments.

The win moved Chanute’s record to level, 6-6, overall on the year. The Blue comets have won five of their last six, with two wins over Parsons plus victories over Paola, Coffeyville and Fort Scott.

Louisburg is responsible for Chanute’s lone defeat since Sept. 18.

“I wish we would’ve done this weeks ago,” Wilcox said. “We always believed we were a good team. We just weren’t playing well. We were never a bad team that was losing. We have gotten better. And it would’ve been easy for our guys to give up. So it’s on them for believing in the work we’re doing. We haven’t made a ton of changes. We’re just focusing on ourselves.”

Up next

Chanute hits the road twice this week, facing Pittsburg on Tuesday and Independence on Thursday.

“We have to keep riding this momentum,” Wilcox said.
