Virginia Roberts

Virginia Winans Roberts was born Aug. 21, 1932. She passed away Oct. 30, 2025. She was born in Urbana. Virginia grew up on the farm between Stark and Chanute. She attended Stark School. She graduated from Great Township Stark Highschool, the Class of 1949.

Following graduation, she moved to Chanute and attended Neosho County Jr. College. While in College, she worked at the Home Lunch Café. While working at the café, she met her first husband, Charles Wagner. They married in June of 1950 and together they had four children. Linda Shoemake, Louise Parish, Loretta Neely, William C. Wagner. They later divorced. In 1970 she married George Briley, he passed away in 2000. In 2001, she married William (Bill) Roberts. Virginia and Bill lived in Chanute, and spent the next twenty years traveling, visiting family, volunteering at the American Legion, playing cards, dancing and enjoying their senior years together. Bill passed in 2020.

Virginia was a member of the Stark Alumni, American Legion Auxiliary, and the First Christian Church. Virginia was an avid reader, beautiful seamstress, hand-quilter, and a steadfast and faithful KU Basketball fan.

Virginia loved her family, she loved family reunions, attending them in Erie on bean feed weekend. She is survived by her four children: Linda Shoemaker (Dan) Chanute, Louise Parish, Humboldt, Loretta Neely, Chanute, William C Wagner (Stacy), Wichita. Eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and her siblings: Kay Hurford (Bob) Topeka. Gary Winans (Vicki) Buffalo, Roy (Short) Winans (Bev), Joplin, Missouri, Virginia will be laid to rest in a graveside service Friday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. Lakeview Cemetery, two miles South of Erie.

Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church or the American Legion Honor Guard. Arrangements have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home.
