Neosho County Community College will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Strahm Family Strength Center on Friday, Nov. 14, at 11:30 a.m. Community members, students, staff, and faculty are invited to join in celebrating and touring the new facility.
This project was made possible through a donation from the family of Matt Strahm, Major League Baseball pitcher and NCCC alumnus. The project focused on renovating the college’s Wellness Center on the Chanute Campus with upgraded equipment and improved training facilities for student-athletes and the broader campus community. The building is nicknamed “The Spot.”
“NCCC was the place that gave me my shot, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the opportunities I had here,” said Strahm. “Fitness and training are crucial for any athlete, and I want to make sure future Panthers have access to the best facilities possible.”
Strahm, a 2012 graduate of NCCC and a current pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, credits NCCC for playing a pivotal role in his baseball journey. The project was sparked by a conversation with NCCC Head Baseball Coach Steve Murry about how the former Wellness Center was “the spot” where Strahm felt he became a professional player, hence the facility’s new nickname.
“Matt has always been someone who remembers where he came from,” said Murry, who coached Strahm during his time as a Panther. “This generous gift is going to have a lasting impact on our student-athletes and help them train at a higher level. We couldn’t be more thankful for his continued support of NCCC.”
The renovation included the installation of state-of-the-art cardio and weightlifting equipment, ADA enhancements, renovation of interior flooring and walls, and exterior improvements. The wellness center, which is located just north of Panther Gymnasium, plays a key role for student-athletes, faculty, and staff—and this project has greatly increased that role.
“This is an incredible investment in our students and our institution,” said Dr. Brian Inbody, NCCC President. “Matt’s generosity is a testament to the strong connection he still feels to the Chanute community, and we are honored to have his name associated with this facility. His gift will benefit our students for years to come.”
“The Spot” will be used not only by student-athletes, but also for classes such as Senior Fitness, and is open for use by students who are not on athletic teams, staff, and faculty during open hours.
“Matt’s generosity has taken Neosho County Athletics to the next level,” said. Dr. Riann Mullis, NCCC Athletic Director. “’The Spot’ is an amazing facility that will provide current and future student-athletes a premiere experience.”
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held outside the northwest entrance of the Strahm Family Wellness Center, with refreshments and open tours to follow.
