Chanute BPW discusses national finance issues

The Chanute Business and Professional Women (BPW) met on Nov. 12, for their regular meeting with Tayah Williams as the Hostess. A meal was provided by Tayah and Jen Brown.

President Sharon Carpenter passed around the Hostess sign-up sheet for 2026. Secretary Tayah Williams read the minutes from the Oct. 23 meeting, and Linda Powers read the financial report.

We held the drawing for the raffle fundraiser held from September-November. Baby Prestyn reached into the jar and pulled out the winning ticket with Shannon Uhmacher winning the prize which was a nice Bag, watch, jewelry and some other items. Profit money was designated for a local scholarship.Kathy Williams reported that she and her great-granddaughter Graycelin Phillips would go Saturday morning and decorate our BPW tree. The tree is for the Festival of Trees held at the Chanute Art Gallery. The club’s theme is “The Nativity- The Reason For The Season.”

Jen Brown presented an interesting program, very pertinent to the financial insecurities currently affecting our country. Information was obtained from the Journal civic magazine. Roughly 1.2 million people cannot meet their financial responsibilities. These people are called “ALICE families” (Assets-Limited Income-Constrained Employees). The $7.25 minimum wage has not changed since 2009. So many people on assistance are not looking for handouts; they are looking for opportunities.

Our next meeting will be on Dec. 10 with Sharon as Hostess. This will be a Christmas party with games and food. Our BPW welcomes anyone who is interested in visiting or joining our meeting. Please call Sharon Carpenter at 620-431-8532 for more information.
