”Ed” Young

JOPLIN — Edwin “Ed” Ernest Young, 92, of Joplin, MO, passed away on Nov 28. Ed was born in Chanute, April 6, 1933, the oldest son of Roscoe and Burneda (Blackburn) Young. His siblings were Harvey L. Young and Janice L. (Young) Hazen.

Following graduation from Chanute High School, he attended the Kansas City Art Institute. In his second year, he was drafted into the army and served in Germany., He returned to the art institute and married LaVonne Hammer; they had two sons, Wesley and Ross Martin. They later divorced. Ed later married Pat Knapp and added four sons: Russ, David (his spouse Jeannie and children Alexandra and Benjamin), Mark, and James. Ed’s son Ross had a son, Ross Michael.

Some of Ed’s work in Chanute included the Royster Rocket mascot he created in the ninth grade for Chanute Junior High School. While working for his brother, Harvey, at Youngs’ welding, he created Martin and Osa signs at the four entrances to Chanute in 1982.

He and Pat moved to Joplin, where he grew amazing flowers for the butterflies, birds, and bees. He was a member of the Joplin Iris Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, parents, brother, and sister in law Audrey Young, James Kapp (Pat’s son), and brother-in-law Leon Hazen.
