Despite ball security woes, Chanute gets by Girard

GIRARD — Winning their fourth straight game, the Chanute Blue Comets boys got by a pesky Girard Trojans squad, 60-46, on the road on Tuesday night.

“I thought we didn’t play as well as we hoped, but getting a road win by double digits shows we’re a pretty good team even if we didn’t play our best,” Chanute head coach Devon Crabtree said.

Crabtree felt the Blue Comets’ ball security was lacking in the win, keeping the Trojans competitive.

“We were more loose with the ball than we have been up to this point,” Crabtree said. “And we gave up too many second-chance opportunities. It wasn’t quite clicking like it was. But we still did some good things.”

Lawrence Chaney and Warrick Olson led Chanute with 13 points apiece Kobe Patterson, who’s emerged as a true complementary threat for Chanute, added a dozen to the box score.

“He’s playing some really good basketball,” Crabtree said. “He’s shooting it well and getting to the free throw line. He’s doing more than shooting threes. He’s made a big jump defensively. He’s getting a lot of deflections. He led us in rebounds last night, so he’s doing a ton of good things.”

Blake Brokob led the Trojans with 11 points.

Up next

Chanute ends its pre-Christmas slate with its SEK League opener against the Fort Scott Tigers on the road.

“It’s going to be a really tough one,” Crabtree said. “Fort Scott is a good team with a lot of size. They can really score the ball and do some nice things defensively. It’s really important to get off to a good start in league play. Doing it on the road is even better. So that’s the goal. We want to go into break with some confidence.”
