Wilson Medical Center welcomes back Dr. Scott Coates, expanding surgical access across southeast Kansas

NEODESHA— Wilson Medical Center is proud to welcome back Dr. Scott Coates, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon whose addition significantly expands local access to surgical care for patients across Southeast Kansas.

Dr. Coates brings decades of experience in general surgery, along with a deep understanding of rural healthcare needs. A Kansas native raised in Chanute, Dr. Coates completed his undergraduate studies at Neosho County Community College before earning his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He went on to complete his general surgery residency at Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

At Wilson Medical Center, Dr. Coates will provide essential diagnostic and surgical procedures— including colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, hernia repairs, and minor surgical care— giving patients in Southeast Kansas access to critical services close to home. “Access matters, especially in rural communities,” Doug Stacy, MBA, CMPE, CEO. “Bringing Dr. Coates to Wilson Medical Center means more patients can receive timely, high-quality surgical care close to home, surrounded by the support of their local healthcare team.”

In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Coates has served in leadership roles within the surgical profession, including service on the American Board of Surgery. His commitment to excellence, patient safety, and community- centered care aligns closely with Wilson Medical Center’s mission to strengthen healthcare access throughout the region. Employed by Labette Health, Dr. Coates continues to see patients in Independence and Parsons while also expanding his outreach through Wilson Medical Center—bringing greater surgical access to patients across Southeast Kansas.

Dr. Coates is now seeing patients at the Neodesha Specialty Clinic. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 620-820-5840 and requesting to be seen at the Neodesha location.
