Castaways Animal Shelter will host an adoption event and fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Tractor Supply Co. in Chanute.
The event will feature adoptable dogs and cats, a dog wash, and a food and bake sale. Organizers will sell pulled pork sandwiches, bottled water and baked goods to raise funds for the shelter’s operations and future programs.
Castaways’ board recently reflected on a milestone year during its annual meeting and officer elections. In 2025, the nonprofit met and exceeded its primary goal of opening and becoming fully operational. Since opening in the spring, 56 animals have been adopted into permanent homes, four were reunited with their owners and two were transferred to trusted rescue partners — 62 animals helped in total.
Looking ahead, Castaways plans to restart its low-cost spay and neuter program to promote responsible pet ownership and help reduce the number of unwanted or neglected animals. The shelter is also working to open a separate boarding facility to provide a safe, reliable option for pet owners while creating an additional revenue stream to support long-term sustainability.
Additional goals include building improvements and the launch of an online store offering merchandise for both pets and their owners.
Organizers encourage community members to attend Saturday’s event to meet adoptable animals, volunteer or support the fundraiser.
Those unable to attend may donate online or mail contributions to Castaways Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 313, Chanute, KS 66720.
