Celebrating Sophomore Night in style, the Neosho County Panthers women routed the Highland Scotties, 109-65, in KJCCC play on Wednesday.
“The game went the way we wanted it to,” Neosho County head coach J.J. Davis said. “Whatever people say about us when we win or when we lose, these sophomores have certainly won a lot of games. So I appreciate it. At the end of the day, I want people to think that Neosho County is someone you have to go beat.”
Neosho County buried 22 3-pointers in the victory, connecting on a third of their attempts from deep.
The Panthers also forced Highland into 37 turnovers.
Lelani Carter led Neosho County with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 from deep.
“I think Lelani has been special,” Davis said. “She’s stuck with it. She’s had ups and downs and stayed the course. It’s cool she got to have the game she had on Sophomore Night.”
Azura Clark (13), Chloe Parker (12) and Jaida Harris (11) also reached double figures for the Panthers.
Highland, which played just six players to Neosho County’s 14, was paced by Shamiah Johnson and Zoe Clark, who had 16 points apiece.
Neosho County improved to 18-10 overall and 7-3 in KJCCC play. The Panthers currently sit in second place in the conference, behind No. 1 Johnson County, with just one game left in the regular season.
“I’ll be honest, I need to get this monkey off my back and get out of the first round,” Davis said. “We’ll focus on the next steps after that. We want to get out of the first round.”
