INDEPENDENCE — Mildred Ernestine Cain, 96, of rural Independence, passed away at Labette Health on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024.
“Ernie” was born Nov. 20, 1928, the second of 10 children born to Charles E. and Mildred A. (Webb) Tripp of Chanute. She grew up in and around Chanute, graduating from Chanute High School in 1946.
On June 22, 1968, she married Waldo Leon “Lee” Cain in Independence. He preceded her in death in 2015 after 47 years of marriage. Also preceding her were her parents; her daughter, Cynthia Perry of Belfair, Washington; six sisters, Rosella, Jeanne, Mary, Dorthy, Shirley and Eleanor; and a brother, LaVerne.
She is survived by her daughter, Lillian Belt of Independence; a stepson, Fred Cain of Topeka; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard Tripp and Tom Tripp, both of Chanute.
“Ernie” loved and was loved by her family, friends and church and she will be missed.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Potts Funeral Chapel of Independence. No service is planned at this time. A private family gathering will take place at a future date to honor Ernestine’s memory.
