A former Chanute High School student is still rockin’, and will be performing this Saturday at the Main Street Pavilion for Artist Alley.
Mike Ashley will present ‘60s Redux from 11:30 am to 1 pm Saturday at the Pavilion at Main and Highland downtown. Ashley, a 1965 graduate of CHS, first started a band with his buddies and played at the teen hangout the Launching Pad.
“We were like 15, 14,” Ashley said.
Later, he attended the University of Kansas and performed with other Chanute players. He now lives in Prairie Village, where he has been in the insurance business since 1990.
“Still doing it,” he said.
But at a surprise party on his 60th birthday, his wife gathered a group of friends to play the old songs. He has been performing since with a repertoire of almost 300 songs.
‘60s Redux is a performance of songs originally done by Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Beach Boys and other teenage idols and one-hit wonders from the 1960s.
“I only do songs that everybody would know,” Ashley said.
Ashley performs solo with recorded backup.
“I sound like the whole band,” he said.
He performs once a month in Chanute at Playmakers and plays a gig with a band three times a year in Nashville, Tenn. He also does a lot of country music.
“It pretty well depends on the crowd,” Ashley said.
