The Chanute Recreation Commission has reduced its staff by several positions over the past several weeks.
Interim CRC Director and City of Chanute Parks Director Todd Newman said many of the cuts happened before he stepped in, and he does not expect them to continue.
“Everyone who’s there now is going to be there for the long haul,” he said.
Newman said at the last board meeting, the CRC had 34 full-time and part-time employees. The current payroll is 15 to 16, he said, including umpires and officials.
He said the CRC has two more weeks to go of baseball before it goes into fall sports. The previous payroll included 14 full- and part-time positions at the Lakeview Recreation Area and ballfields.
Lakeview now has one full-time and three part-time employees, Newman said. The recreation center has nine on staff, including programming and day camps.
Swimming pool staff at Maring Aquatic Center is under the city and not the CRC, and Newman said he has hired 25 lifeguards. To monitor the lazy river feature and all the water areas, Newman said he has to keep 11 lifeguards on deck for 20 minutes at a time. They then rotate out with other staff at admissions, concessions and other duties.
Newman said one employee retired, but he could not say how many resigned voluntarily and how many were terminated. He said activities seem to be running smoothly.
