Humboldt school board members recall petition announced
HUMBOLDT – Humboldt community members are working on a petition to hold a school board recall election.
The announcement of the petition was read at the USD 258 School Board regular meeting Monday by Briana Wilkerson.
The petition text accuses board members of lack of oversight, failure to require accountability from administrators, failure to follow proper contract procedure including solicitation of proper bids, proper contract negotiation and execution and adherence to mandatory terms of contracts. More seriously, the statement accuses board members of using school funds for personal gain, specifically in utilizing school funds for personal trips that fell outside of board member duties.
The petition has to be submitted to the elections board and signed by Allen County Attorney Wade Bowie, who has five days to sign it.
Board President Curt Mueller read a prepared statement, which indirectly addressed the firing of Humboldt Middle School PE Teacher Jeff Wilkerson in August, but did not directly address the petition as it was prepared before the meeting.
The statement reads: to protect our employees’ privacy, we cannot discuss the specifics of any personnel matter. Howeever, we can assure you and all the parents and patrons of USD 258 that the supervision and safety of our students is our highest priority and the board of education cannot compromise or take lightly our responsibilities to supervise and provide safe learning environment for all our students.
