Officers with the Chanute Police Department have taken reports from several businesses in reference to criminal damage and theft of items from inside their businesses within the last few days. On Oct. 9, officers took reports of an individual entering into unlocked vehicles on East Main Street. Around 8 pm, officers were able to identify a person of interest for these crimes.

Officers arrested John M. Bixler, 23, Chanute, on the following charges: three counts of burglary of a non-dwelling, three counts of burglary of a vehicle, six counts of theft, and one count of criminal damage. He was transported to the Neosho County Jail without incident. The investigation is still ongoing at this time. Reports will be forwarded to the Neosho County Attorney’s office for review and consideration of charges being filed. 

The police department reminds residents to not leave vehicles unlocked or leave valuables in plain sight. Anything suspicious or if anyone is seen by cars and lifting or “checking” door handles, please call central dispatch at (620) 431-5768.
