WAMEGO — The Chanute High cross country team closed out its season at the State meet in Wamego on Saturday.
“Our two state qualifiers did a great job competing at their first state meet,” coach Brett Rinehart of Bryce Bingham and Abbigail Smith. “Weather was absolutely perfect. The course at Wamego Country Club is a very challenging, hilly course.”
Bryce was the first to compete, and the coach said he ran a good race in the 4A boys 5K, finishing in 60th place with a time 18:26.
“He was pretty nervous leading up to the race, and even in the first mile, he looked a little shell-shocked,” Rrinehart said. ‘However, he settled in and ran his second best time of the year on the very difficult course. I was happy with how he competed and I hope he is hungry to get back there again next year.”
Abigail also competed very well in the 4A girls race.
“She got herself right in the race from the beginning and was around 40th position a mile into the race,” her coach said. “She faded a little to a 56th place finish, but she still ran a very respectable time of 22:39. I really think she enjoyed her experience; in fact, only minutes after the race she was already talking about running harder next summer so she can be better prepared next year.
“From the level of competition to the amount of spectators on the course, it can be overwhelming to somebody who has not been there before. They both handled it very well and now have an experience that they will remember for a lifetime.”
