VI playoffs

Earning four wins Saturday and Sunday, the Neosho County Community College baseball team completed a 40-win regular season. The final regular season record for the Panthers is 40-14.

In the past five years, the Panthers have won 40 games four times. In program history, Neosho has won 40 games eight times.

“The kids are playing really well,” Murry said. “That’s 40 wins, which is the bench mark of a great team. We’re excited to be where we’re at right now. Now we just need to carry that into in the playoffs next week.”

Freshman Jonah Bride broke the Neosho regular season hit record with 91 hits.

The Panthers completed the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference East season with a double-header sweep of Independence Community College Saturday. Neosho (23-13 KJCCC East, 40-14 overall) beat the Pirates 9-2 in game one and 15-9 in game two. Neosho won the four-game season series 3-1.

Sunday the Panthers shut out Brown Mackie 3-0 in game one and blew out the Lions 11-1 in game two. Against Brown Mackie Levi Ashmore made a spectacular defensive play at second, snatching a ground ball moving towards left field and throwing the batter out at first while still drifting in towards left.

Sunday’s double-header was the final regular season game for Neosho. A game at Hudson Field against Rockhurst University scheduled for Monday was cancelled by Rockhurst.

Neosho will host Barton Community College in a best-of-three series in the first round of the Region VI playoffs Saturday at Hudson Field.

“It’s do or die,” Murry said about the playoffs. “It’s a little more intense and mistakes show up a little higher as do great plays like Levi Ashmore’s right there. Those are game changers in the playoffs. It’s live or die. Survive and advance, don’t care how you do it. Playoffs is a different beast.”
